THE SKIN OF ALL - LYGIA PAPE
Neo-Concrete Art, Poetry and Resistance
Lygia Pape was one of the central protagonists of Brazilian neo-concrete art. The extensive publication on the occasion of the artist's first major solo exhibition in Germany presents Pape's unusual creative power in its entirety, as well as documents from the artist's archive that have been published for the first time. Pape's work extends over five decades within a field of tension between two repressive dictatorship periods (1937-1945 and 1964-1985) and a fruitful cultural and economic upheaval in Brazil. In this climate, Pape developed her specific artistic understanding, which includes an abstract-concrete language of forms as well as experimental explorations of space or poetic manifestations of subtle resistance. In addition to ethical and socio-political issues, she made her work fruitful for experimental experiences involving all the senses and declared the physically integrated viewers to be the actual designers of her works.
LYGIA PAPE (1927–2004) had been a member of the Grupo Frente from Rio de Janeiro since 1947, which was dedicated to concrete art and geometric abstraction. In 1959 she signed the Manifesto Neoconcreto. She was interested in the liberation of artworks from static form, she worked with many media: painting, graphic works, sculptures, spatial installations, performances, ballet compositions and multi-sensory experiments through to poetry.
